The NYAMUGA Special School is a mixed boarding primary school for physically challenged pupils. It was founded in 1990 by a community initiative under the auspices of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya as a home for the physically challenged and became a government school in 2008.
The school gives a chance to physically disabled children who have no access to education due to mobility problems, family neglect and stigmatisation. The school, which started with 10 pupils, has grown steadily to 205 pupils and is constantly expanding.
The school is located on a 4 hectare site in Rusinga East, Mbita Division and Mbita Sub County and admits pupils from the entire Homa Bay district and neighbouring districts.
Learners with physical and health disabilities should be enabled to receive a high-quality education and realise their full potential.
Creating an enabling environment to provide learners with special needs equal access to quality and relevant education so that they can become independent and fully integrated into the community.
BaRuIs e.V. supports NYAMUGA by providing wheelchairs, walking aids, mattresses and bedding. In 2023, the school will receive a large grant from the genialsozial programme of the Saxon Youth Foundation. The construction of a new kitchen building with a dining hall, equipment for pre-vocational training as well as a chicken farm and a kitchen garden for learning and self-sufficiency at the school will significantly improve the learning and living conditions.
