Background
At the beginning of 2026, after long preparations and full of hope, struggle and community effort, Samwel Ogalah was finally able to open the Rusinga NVC School (Non-Violent Communication).
He and his colleagues have completed targeted training in Nonviolent Communication (NVC). At the schools in Rusinga , they offer NVC training for teachers, parents, and other staff. Their goal is for everyone involved in school life to be familiar with and trained in NVC, so that its principles are integrated into the school community and daily interactions.
The new NVC School is a community-based learning center on Rusinga Island in the Homa Bay district of Kenya. Based on the principles of Nonviolent Communication, the school offers children from disadvantaged families a high-quality education in a safe, compassionate, and inclusive environment.
Samwel writes to us:
“But behind the joy of seeing the children learn lies a painful reality. Many of our students come from families marked by violence, deep poverty, and instability. Some parents struggle to even prepare a simple meal. As a result, many children arrive at school hungry and exhausted, and sometimes we see them fall asleep in class simply because their bodies need nourishment. As educators and community members, these moments deeply affect us. We believe that children should not have to fight hunger while trying to learn. Our dream is for them to feel safe, equal, seen, and cared for at school.”
How we help
The school currently serves 38 pupils aged 4 to 8 years, many of whom come from households affected by poverty, violence and other social and economic challenges. There is only one classroom, no furniture, and hardly any learning materials. Our association , BaRuIs eV, wants to support this excellent initiative from the outset and help improve the children’s living and learning conditions.
Goals
- For many children attending the Rusinga NVC school, the classroom is more than just a place of learning. It is a place of security, belonging, encouragement, dignity, and hope.
- With the completion of this classroom, the children will have a safe environment in which they can learn, communicate, resolve conflicts through dialogue, develop self-confidence, realize their potential and prepare for a better future.
Requirements
To achieve these goals, the institution needs, among other things, the following:
Implementation of the program
Prices are based on detailed cost estimates. Samwel’s NVC School team will coordinate all activities. They will purchase and transport materials and issue receipts for each item in the budget, which will be listed with a specific amount. They will share reports in written and visual form and document progress after the support is provided. The NVC School will deliver comprehensive reports every six months.
