Rusinga School for Non-Violent Communication (NVC)

The school was founded by members of the local community who are convinced that every child, regardless of their background, deserves access to a good education. Alongside academic learning, the school promotes empathy, cooperation, respect and peaceful conflict resolution, thereby helping the children to grow into compassionate and responsible members of society.

Samwel writes to us:

“Yet behind the joy of seeing children learn lies a painful reality. Many of our pupils come from families marked by violence, deep poverty and instability. Some parents struggle to prepare even a simple meal. That is why many children arrive at school hungry and exhausted, and sometimes we see them falling asleep in class, simply because their bodies need nourishment. As educators and members of the community, these moments touch us deeply. We believe that children should not have to fight hunger whilst trying to learn. Our dream is for them to feel safe, equal, seen and cared for at school.”

The school currently serves 38 students, many of whom come from households affected by poverty, violence, and other social and economic challenges.

The children follow the relevant state curriculum and are introduced to the principles and practice of Non-Violent Communication. It is not simply an additional school subject. It influences communication, cooperation, conflict resolution and an understanding of the feelings and needs of both teachers and children. The aim is to promote both the children’s academic achievement and their social and emotional skills.

The school currently has three state-qualified teachers and Samwel, a certified trainer in non-violent communication. They deserve our full support.
